Planning Assumptions

Methodology, assumptions & important limitations

Projection method. The toolkit converts the selected nominal investment return and inflation assumptions into a real return, then projects current savings and monthly contributions to the selected retirement age in today’s dollars.

Retirement income estimate. The initial portfolio-income estimate applies the selected withdrawal rate to projected assets available for retirement spending, then adds the Social Security and pension/other guaranteed income entered by the user. Healthcare entered separately is added to the user’s spending target.

Retirement Readiness Score. The score is an educational indicator based primarily on the estimated income funding ratio. In the full analysis, portfolio longevity through the selected planning age also affects the score. The score is not a credit score, investment rating, probability of success, or individualized recommendation.

Longevity analysis. The full analysis performs a simplified annual projection after retirement using the selected real return and the annual spending gap not covered by entered guaranteed income. The optional long-term-care reserve is held outside the amount available for ordinary retirement spending.

Tax estimate. The after-tax figure is intentionally simplified. It applies the entered estimated retirement tax rate to non-Roth retirement resources and should not be treated as a tax projection. Taxable income, basis, capital gains, required distributions, deductions, credits, state taxes, and sequencing strategies are not modeled.

Social Security comparison. The toolkit does not calculate Social Security benefits. Users enter their own benefit estimates at age 62, full retirement age and age 70. The comparison shows simple cumulative benefits through the selected planning age and does not account for taxes, investment opportunity cost, spousal/survivor rules, COLAs, earnings tests, or other program rules.

Important limitations. Results are hypothetical, will vary with each use and over time, and are not guarantees of future results. Actual returns, inflation, taxes, fees, expenses, market conditions, Social Security benefits, pension benefits, healthcare costs, long-term-care costs, withdrawal needs, life expectancy and other factors may differ materially. This educational tool does not consider every aspect of a user’s financial situation and does not provide individualized investment, tax, legal or accounting advice.
